The Daniel Fast involves:

1. A spiritual commitment – “Daniel purposed in his heart (made up his mind) that he would not defile himself.” (Daniel 1:8closeDaniel 1:8 Daniel's Faithfulness But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. (ESV) closeDaniel 1:8closeDaniel 1:8 Daniel's Faithfulness But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. (ESV) )

2. Inner desire reflected by outer discipline – ‘I was mourning for three weeks; I did not eat any pleasant bread (rich foods), meat or drink any wine…..until the three weeks were passed.”  (Daniel 10:2-3closeDaniel 10:2-3 In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three weeks. I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks. (ESV) closeDaniel 10:2-3closeDaniel 10:2-3 In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three weeks. I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks. (ESV) )

3. Increased prayer life – “He knelt down at the open windows and prayed to God three times a day and gave thanks to His God.” (Daniel 6:10closeDaniel 6:10 10 When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. (ESV) closeDaniel 6:10closeDaniel 6:10 10 When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. (ESV) 10 When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. 4. A statement of faith to others – “Then let our countenance be looked upon before thee and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat…” (Daniel 1:13closeDaniel 1:13 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” (ESV) closeDaniel 1:13closeDaniel 1:13 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” (ESV) 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” (ESV) a).    Daniel was making a statement of faith when he asked for only water and vegetables and then asked the overseer to compare him and the other sons of Israel to the young men who ate the king’s meat.

5. Yielding all results to God – Daniel stated, “As you see fit, deal with your servants.”     (Daniel 1:13closeDaniel 1:13 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” (ESV) closeDaniel 1:13closeDaniel 1:13 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” (ESV) 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” (ESV) b.)

The Daniel Fast will lead to:

1. Spiritual Insight and Wisdom – “As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.”  (Daniel 1:17closeDaniel 1:17 17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. (ESV) 17 As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. (ESV) )

2. New Spiritual Direction and Effectiveness– “Daniel, don’t be afraid. God has heard your prayers ever since the first day you decided to humble yourself in order to gain understanding.” (Daniel 10:12closeDaniel 10:12 12 Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. (ESV) closeDaniel 10:12closeDaniel 10:12 12 Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. (ESV) 12 Then he said to me, “Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. (ESV) )

3. Spiritual and Physical Health – “When the time was up, they looked healthier and stronger than those who had been eating the royal food.” (Daniel 1:15closeDaniel 1:15 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king's food. (ESV) closeDaniel 1:15closeDaniel 1:15 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king's food. (ESV) 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king's food. (ESV) )

4. An Excellent Spirit and Favor among God and Men – “Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.” (Daniel 6:3closeDaniel 6:3 Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other presidents and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. (ESV) )

Remember these truths about fasting:

1. Fasting looses the bands of wickedness – “Is this not the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?” (Isaiah 58:6closeIsaiah 58:6 “Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the straps of the yoke,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to break every yoke? (ESV)

)

2. Fasting builds our faith – “Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.” (Matthew 17:21closeMatthew 17:20-22 20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection 22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, (ESV) closeMatthew 17:20-22closeMatthew 17:20-22 20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. 3. Fasting makes it easier to hear the voice of the Lord – “As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, “Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.” And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.” (Acts 13:2-3closeActs 13:2-3 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
